  Amazing traditional bookshop, a bit like a small university library really. Could spend hours in there.

  Spelman's is one of the best second-hand bookshops in York, especially if you're hunting old humanities literature. It's a shame then that their primary member of staff (a short-haired woman who has worked there for years to my knowing) is so deficient in people skills as to make visiting a reluctant experience. If you enjoy being resented because you're simply there or if you enjoy being spoken to as if you've just slapped someone then visiting will be right up your street. As for me, sorry Spelman's but after 13 years of visiting, I'll be walking past and using amazon in future.
