  I Would like too thank all the staff at Harlaw ward, my father was in for 4 weeks, and was very well looked after! All the staff do an amazing job. Thankyou.

  A close relative of mine with a severe mental health problem finally got an appointment with a social worker, Anisa Rafiq. Anisa informed us at the meeting that he should have been seen by a social worker every year but had been overlooked for the last 5-6 years. When we asked if she could find out why he had been overlooked, Anisa refused to do so and simply said these things just happen! My relative had been asking to see a social worker for at least two years for help to obtain alternative accommodation. Although he gave Anisa a typed written agenda clearly outlining why it would be beneficial for him to move, she refused to read his agenda and instead bombarded him with questions regarding his staff support hours. Although it became clear 10 minutes into the meeting that Anisa hadn`t even taken the time to find out anything about my relative`s mental health needs ( she didn`t know his diagnosis, if he had a psychiatrist or what his prescribed medication is), she made the snap decision that his level of support was high with a view to cutting his support hours. It is no coincidence that this was in the context of Penumbra ( my relative`s support provider) currently having a staffing crisis due to staff shortages. It was obvious at the meeting that Anisa`s sole aim was to try to cut my relative`s support hours to help with Penumbra`s crisis and to save the Social Work money. How many times have we heard these inept and arrogant social workers say "there are lessons to be learned", when they`ve failed people with severe mental health problems, elderly people, and other vulnerable people in the community? Whilst social workers such as Anisa are intent on saving on budgets to the detriment of people who have complex mental health issues, how are lessons ever going to be learned? Perhaps the Social Work War Cry "lessons will be learned" means that they will have learned how to do better " cover ups" pertaining to future failings to prevent them from being exposed....after all, they`ll have had years of practice!!

  The sad truth is that it wouldn`t matter if the REH received a million negative reviews,nothing is likely to change for the better. Having worked as a nurse there for over 20 years I`ve witnessed the instutionalised culture which prevails in this backward institution. Most of those in senior positions have become more instiutionalised than the patients they`re meant to be rehabilitating and have a vested interest in ensuring that the status quo prevails. Why implement changes for the better when you can have an easy life in the knowledge that you`re accountable to no one? It isn`t a case of the building being shut down that is required, but rather a radical shake up particulalry of those in positions of power. Sadly, due to the stigma associated with mental illness, those with psychiatric daignosis often lack a voice in our society, which means that the abysmal standards of care prevalent in backward institutions such as the REH. are likely to continue for years to come......unless we all fight for change!

  The genuine patient reviews fill me with such sadness, I hope the established approach to how we treat these people changes soon. The patients deserve, freedom and autonomy and a safe space to have these needs met in small every day ways, choices about where they sleep and what that space looks like, choices about whether they cook or not, access to the phone to call loved ones and being met by skilled befrienders to meet their need to be heard. I have now moved away from the area but there is a new building and often an environmental change can facilitate social / structural change. I hope that the review level on here improves.

  Just the most dreadful hospital especially if you're elderly and vulnerable. This hospital is unable to nurture and promote positive mental health. It destroys patients and their families through negligence, disregard and bullying. The staff are unprofessional and heartless apart from the auxiliaries and cleaners who can only look on in shock. Please avoid this so called hospital at all costs. You truly put your life in danger by going into this dump.
