::The Lewes Railway Land, managed by the Railway Land Wildlife Trust, is a great example of what happens when a parcel of land is abandoned by industry, and it is decided that the land itself is worth more to the inhabitants of the town. After the demise of the Lewes to Uckfield railway line in 1969, the path of the dismantled tracks on much of the west bank of the River Ouse has been allowed to attain its natural condition. Today, there are countless walking paths, tall trees, waterways, fauna, amid much peace even though the land is still close to the often busy centre of Lewes. Information about the wildlife to be found there, and the conservation work required, is placed on notice-boards at the entrances to the land, while workshops and exhibitions often take place in the ecologically-designed Linklater Pavilion on the land.
