York Minster is an awe inspiring building full of history and beauty. In particular I recommend braving the steps and climbing the tower for some of the best views in Yorkshire. If you’re around at Christmas then midnight mass at the Minster is the best I’ve ever been too and never fails to put me in the mood for Christmas. This is a must see destination for anyone visiting York.

Huge, awe-inspiring Gothic cathedral, with a wealth of intricate medieval stonework inside and out, and beautiful stained glass windows. I paid £9 for a senior admission, the ticket is reusable for twelve months after the purchase date. There are free guided tours lasting an hour, but I explored on my own. It can get very busy with sightseers, but there are chapels for quiet contemplation. Highlights for me included the recently restored Great East Window, dating from 1405, the statues of medieval kings on the quire screen, and the amusing little stone heads in the Chapter House. A group of young people were doing choral practice in there, great acoustics, and the singing was beautiful. In the undercroft you can see Roman foundations, carved pillars from the old Norman cathedral and the shrine of York's patron saint. I felt a real sense of two thousand years of history and faith. The gift shop has everything from tapestries to magnetic bracelets, and some nice art prints and books.

This is a fantastic medieval cathedral, make sure you buy ticket including tower trip as views are amazing. For info it costs £15 each incl tower (£10 without) and ticket allows you unlimited visits for 12 months (only one tower trip though on day of purchase). Parts of building including some of the stained glass windows over 1000 years old.

Beautiful space. Mesmerizing outside and in! Not only did we go in and do the tour (plus all the stairs up to the top!!) but we also sat outside in the grass near the entrance and that was also lovely. Getting up to the top is an adventure but the views from up there are breathtaking! We didn't do the wheel they have there in York but we didn't feel cheated as the view from atop the York Minster seemed just as fulfilling! It has so many areas for you to explore and look around. While we were there they were in the process of restoring their stained glass window so that was covered, but they also had this exhibit where they displayed some of the panels of the windows up close so you could go right up in front of them to take a look at them. An amazing experience! York is an amazing city with a great head for making each experience an education but also a fun one. Highly recommend all of York starting with the captivating Minster!

Excellent historical cathedral. Certainly one of the best the country has to offer. Some restoration work being done on some of the stonework and windows but more interesting because of it. Cannot recommend highly enough the climb up to the roof of one of the towers. Just amazing views of york when you get there.
